Understanding the burr classification to determine the deburring process

Burr is the inevitable product of metal cutting. It is a kind of shear slip and plastic deformation of the grain under the action of cutting forces, so that the material is squeezed and torn, resulting in the appearance of excess material on the surface of the part or at the joint. The presence of burrs not only affects the appearance of the part, but also reduces the quality of the part and brings difficulties and hidden dangers to the subsequent inspection and assembly of the product.

Deburring is an important and necessary production process, the main methods are: traditional machining, electrochemical, electrolytic, ultrasonic, thermal explosion, grinding and high-pressure water jets, etc., however, no matter which deburring process, there are certain limitations, different materials, structures, shapes, processing methods formed by different burr classification, different categories also need to choose different deburring methods.

A, the classification of burr

1. Extruded burrs, bending burrs, tearing burrs and cutting burrs are divided according to the formation of burrs.

2. Block burrs, scale burrs, strip burrs and pitted burrs are classified according to the shape of the burr.

3. Large burrs, small burrs and micro burrs are classified according to the size of the burr.

4. According to the shape of the cross-section of the burr, it can be divided into rectangular, triangular, oval and other shapes.

Deburring methods

Appropriate deburring methods will improve product quality and reduce costs, some products are rougher, as long as the ordinary brush or file, sandpaper can be polished, some products have higher requirements, as the burr is more solid, need to go through cutting process, and high precision products, to completely remove the burr, or burr off will cause incalculable losses.

1、Manual deburring

Suitable for products with simple structure, small burrs and not very high requirements.

2、Die deburring

Suitable for products with simple parting surfaces, with better efficiency and deburring effect than manual.

3、Freezing deburring

Suitable for products with small burr wall thickness and small products.

4、Heat explosion deburring

Also known as thermal deburring, explosive deburring, mainly used in some high-density parts field, the operation of high technical requirements, low efficiency.

5, chemical deburring

Suitable for difficult to remove the internal burr, suitable for the pump body, valve body and other products with small burrs.

6、Ultrasonic deburring

Mainly for some microscopic burrs. Generally if the burr needs to be observed with a microscope, you can try to remove it with the ultrasonic method.

Among the many deburring methods, thermal deburring, magnetic deburring, high-pressure water deburring, electrolytic deburring and jet deburring belong to the ultra-fine level deburring methods. It is the fine contact that enables the part to be machined with sufficient precision.
